The authors present an analytical model and analytical results for the performance of asynchronous multibuffered Banyan network with variable packet length. Previous work involving analytical results has focused on synchronous multibuffered Banyan networks with fixed packet length; there have been very few analytical studies on the performance of asynchronous Banyan networks. These studies have assumed unbuffered asynchronous Banyan networks, but studied buffered asynchronous networks only by means of simulation. This paper presents a complete analysis for multibuffered Banyan network that includes analytical solution for the throughput and delay. The importance of this analysis stems from the fact that the window size policy, which helps considerably to improve throughput and delay, can only be efficient in asynchronous mode, and so this mode is suitable for ATM (asynchronous transfer mode). Moreover, the analysis presented here can be modified to deal with nonuniform traffic patterns. The analytical results obtained compare favourably to those produced via simulation model.
