Methodology for the verification of seismic design factors of shear wall buildings

Abstract

Amethodology forverifyingthe seismicdesign response factorsusingthe inelastic staticpushover and dynamic collapse analyses ofMulti-Degrees of Freedom(MDOF) systems is discussed in this paper. Five high-rise buildings are designed usingmodern design provisions to represent a wide range of contemporary concretewall structures inmedium seismicity regions.Due care is given to develop detailed fiber-based analyticalmodels for inelastic simulation, considering the geometric nonlinearity and material inelasticity of structural members. The developed MDOF analytical models are verified by comparing two and three-dimensional analyticalmodels developed using different analysis platforms. The ground motion uncertainty is accounted for by employing a wide range of earthquake records representing two seismic scenarios consistent with the latest understanding of the tectonic setting and seismicity of a reference region (UAE). The presented methodology enables verifying the seismicperformance factors recommended bymodern design codes for a wide range of structures. This has several benefits, particularly on improving the reliability and cost effectiveness of earthquake-resistant buildings in earthquake-prone regions.
