Abstract

The evolution of medical education in North America has gone through three stages: science-based curriculum at the beginning of the 20th century, a problembased approach in the 1960s and currently a competency-based educational model. The University of Montreal recently launched a reform of medical studies, integrating into the curriculum the seven basic competencies expected from a modern doctor. This article will present a short overview of the historical background of that reform, as well as define the main concepts and will attempt to envisage how this new method of learning could be applied to the education of future psychiatrists.
