Abstract

Human type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is often characterized by obesity-associated insulin resistance and beta-cell function deficiency. Type 2 diabetes is a strong independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and it is associated with premature development of micro and macrovascular disease, accounting for approximately 70% of all mortality in people with diabetes. This chapter provides an overview of recent advances between insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk factors and explores in particular the safety and efficacy of thiazolidinediones in providing treatment for populations with insulin resistance and T2DM, which is are at high risk factors of for the development ofing cardiovascular disease.
