Effect of energy extraction on solar pond performance

Abstract

The effect of extracted heat load (qLd) on solar pond performance is studied. A finite difference method is used to solve the governing equations. It was found that the thickness of the non-convection zone (NCZ) is dependent on the amount of qLd. This thickness varies between 0.91 and 1.18 m for the qLd variation between 30 and 10 W/m2, respectively. At these thicknesses of NCZ, the maximum storage temperature can be achieved. The lost energy from the pond is a maximum if no load is extracted. However, the amount of absorbed solar radiation in the pond is increased by increasing the extracted load.
