Design Function Deployment (DFD) allows quality to be built into the development of a product or process, at the early stages of engineering design, by using a planned and controlled approach to design. DFD provides the necessary platform for a design for quality system by allowing (1) the consideration of many design solutions before find selection, (2) evaluation and optimization at various stages of the design process, (3) the use of several design methods to minimize variation, (4) the use of emerging technologies and materials, and (5) the adoption of a simultaneous design approach. DFD, thus ensures both direct and indirect integration of quality into the product design.
