A proof of concept design for splitting the single conventional beam of a Yagi antenna into multiple beams is presented by exciting the 3λg loop resonating mode as well as using multiple director elements. The proposed multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system is designed in a triangular configuration, so that the adjacent beams do not cancel the effect of each other and to achieve orthogonal radiation patterns each covering 120o sector. The design has a minimum measured -10 dB bandwidth of 980 MHz (5.66-6.64 GHz) targeting the WLAN band. The board diameter of the MIMO antenna system is only 120 mm. It has a minimum front-to-back ratio (FBR) of 10 dB, gain of 3.8 dBi, and efficiency of 92%. The proposed MIMO antenna system has high port isolation of 30 dB and low envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) value of 0.012 in the entire band of operation between all its elements.
