A multicriteria approach to global facility location-allocation problem

    Abstract

    The international site selection process deals with widely varying circumstances were the analysis procedures are less structured. Companies that are considering foreign locations may assess numerous factors relative to each country under consideration. The general economic and political climates of other countries may have long-range consequences for multinational operations. The evaluation of potential locations for overseas investment involves other factors that represent the political, economic, social and infrastructural host country characteristics must be explored. As a result, a firm contemplating a foreign location must carefully weigh the potential benefits against the potential problems. This paper, through goal programming, demonstrates how international qualitative factors could be easily incorporated in location-allocation problems. Through goal programming, this study analyzes the sensitivity of location-allocation decisions involving international location factors. The study in hand concerns the stage in location-allocation decision making process where the list of potential foreign sites has been narrowed down to a few.
